Day One . . .

Darin and I arrived last night after a LONG drive. It took us almost thirteen hours to get here. The highlight of the drive was seeing a daredevil riding down the highway doing a wheelie on his crotch rocket! Our hotel is wonderful and is located near lots of stores including target and barnes and noble :) We are fifteen minutes away from the CCI training center and are staying at the same hotel as two of my classmates. We did a lot of orientation type stuff today including watching a video of the class that just graduated in March. We also had two lectures in the classroom and did two practical sessions (this means working the dogs!)

As many of you know, the first two days of training I will work with a variety of dogs and then will be placed with one of these dogs on Wednesday! Many CCI graduates (including myself) believe you can "predict" which dog you will be placed with based on how many times you work each dog. The more times you work a dog increases the likelihood that the trainers are observing you with the dog and trying to take notes. I already know that the the trainers have identified two or three dogs that will be a good fit with me. Today I worked with four dogs. There are fifteen dogs in our class and only four of them are not black. There is a high chance I will be bringing home a black dog!
The first dog that I worked with was a male dog named Keaton, who reminded me of Rex in every way except size. Keaton was a littler slower and needed to be motivated a lot, but he was also very sweet and affection. Maybe I will be place with this dog that reminds me so much of Rex.
Next I worked with a female dog who was very responsive and easy to work with. I enjoyed working with this dog because she was so well behaved and was also affection. She was a petite dog who looks mainly like a golden retriever. Her hair was a little crazy - sticking up all over the place. Could it be possible that I will get my first female CCI dog?
The third dog I worked was a little inconsistent, sometimes he listened really well, other times he just did what he wanted. He was a tall black lab with flappy ears named Hershel. Out of all the dogs in my class, we all seemed to have the most problems with this dog because he is strong willed. I actually enjoyed working with him despite his reputation. He had big brown eyes that he flashed at me whether he was behaving or being naughty. I am a sucker for brown eyes.
The fourth dog I worked was a dog that resembled a golden retriever with long legs. His name was Dewey. Out of all the dogs I worked today, he was the most consistent and responsive. Maybe I will have two goldens . . .
I am feeling really good about team training and liked all of the dogs I worked with. I am feeling objective about the dogs. Instead of thinking about which one I liked the best I concentrated on trying to understand their personalities while I was spending time with them. I don't have a favorite right now which I think is a good way to go into tomorrow. I think after tomorrow I will have a better sense of who the trainers are thinking of for me and a better understanding of the dogs themselves.
